VUJE played a key role in the construction of the new electric substation in Mierovo, significantly strengthening the region's electrical grid
The joint consortium project for Západoslovenská distribučná, successfully executed by VUJE, a.s., and a subsidiary of PPA CONTROLL LiV ELEKTRA, a.s., was recently completed with the ceremonial opening of a new modern 110/22 kV electrical substation in Mierovo. In an exceptionally short period of 16 months, a fully automated distribution facility, requiring no permanent on-site staff, was constructed from the ground up, equipped with intelligent systems for operation monitoring and remote control from the control center. The project will significantly increase the capacity and reliability of electricity distribution in the Mierovo – Šamorín area.

The goal of constructing the Mierovo electrical substation (hereinafter ES) was to ensure more stable supply of electricity to existing and future consumers in the area and its vicinity. “Its uniqueness lies mainly in its strategic location in an important energy hub between the electrical substations Podunajské Biskupice and Dunajská Streda, which also affects the nearby cross-border Hungarian region,” says the head of the VUJE ES Construction Project Implementation Department, Róbert Pasteľák
The construction of the new electrical substation will significantly reduce the load on the 110/22 kV substations in Podunajské Biskupice and Dunajská Streda and increase the capacity of the distribution network to integrate new small and local renewable energy producers, such as photovoltaic systems, and also support the further development of electromobility.
Given the current problematic situation with energy carriers such as oil and natural gas, electricity remains one of the most reliable and accessible sources of heating. “Many of the newly built properties currently use electric heating, which places significant demands on electricity distribution in this region. We also perceive growing demands related to electromobility and the need to expand charging infrastructure,” said the Executive Director of Západoslovenská distribučná (ZSD) Radoslav Haluška to TASR.

The Mierovo ES, into which ZSD invested more than 20 million EUR, with 35 percent co-financing from the European Union’s Danube InGrid HU/SK project, which has been granted priority status and the highest national significance, will serve as a transformer station. It is a completely new type of substation with a control and information system designed for future expansion.
“For reliable remote control from the respective dispatch centers, it was necessary to build a control and information system in all parts of the electrical substation, i.e., in the R110 kV and R22 kV switchyards, transformers T101, T102, and the auxiliary power supply,” explains the head of the department from 1200 Division Róbert Pasteľák, which implemented the project for VUJE. The prerequisite for remote control of the substation was the complexity of all information, which included signaling, control, and measurement of all necessary equipment, the possibility of remote diagnostics and parameterization of automation components, ensuring the reliability of data transmission between the electrical substation and the dispatch center, as well as fire and security protection of the facility itself.
VUJE provided key expert work
VUJE carried out key expert work with high added value, requiring significant technical skill and professionalism. This primarily involved work on the R22 kV switchyard, including the electrical connection of LV and HV cabling, installation of high voltage cable terminations, and most importantly, the configuration, setup, and testing of the protections.
“The instability of the electrical grid in the area, caused by fluctuations due to photovoltaic power plants, significantly complicated the work. Therefore, it was necessary to repeatedly adjust the protection settings not only at the 22 kV level but also at the higher 110 kV level to ensure the safe, reliable, and stable operation of the distribution network in the region,” explains Róbert Pasteľák. “The high level of expertise is also evidenced by the fact that we implemented the requested changes from the client in a very short time and at a professional technical level, even without sufficient project documentation,” he adds.
Construction work on the Mierovo project began on January 31, 2023, with installation work completed on July 31, 2024. In early September 2024, the 110/22 kV electrical substation was ceremoniously opened with the participation of Markus Kaune, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Západoslovenská energetika, Radoslav Haluška, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Západoslovenská distribučná, Kamil Šaško, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, representatives of state and local government, as well as representatives of the consortium partners of the EU-funded international project, Danube InGrid.
