The Reactor from Newcleo, Which VUJE Has Signed a Collaboration With, Is Successful on the European Scene. Our Media Are Also Writing About It
The European Industrial Alliance for Small Modular Reactors has included the lead-cooled fast nuclear reactor designed by the French company newcleo among its supported projects. The Alliance was established by the European Union this spring.
Newcleo is currently the fastest-growing startup in the field of nuclear energy in Europe. Back in August this year, the French signed a cooperation agreement with VUJE, aiming to establish a closer partnership in the development of advanced modular reactor technologies and advanced fuel cycle solutions. This was preceded by a Memorandum of Understanding concluded by newcleo with the Ministry of Economy and the Nuclear and Decommissioning Corporation JAVYS.
Hospodárske noviny, the daily SME, and The Slovak Spectator have noted that a key part of the company’s fast reactor concept should be a plan to recycle spent nuclear fuel from conventional reactors. The goal is to achieve low-carbon electricity and heat production that could be used in variety of industrial processes. At the same time, recycling eliminates dependence on imported nuclear fuel and provides a sustainable solution to the long-term challenge of nuclear waste.
“We believe that advanced modular reactor technologies and the closure of the fuel cycle have great potential for the future of nuclear power in Slovakia and Europe. We hope that by participating in the development of newcleo, we will help to make these technologies available as soon as possible,” said Matej Korec, CEO of VUJE.
Specific areas of cooperation between newcleo and VUJE may include assessing the deployment of their reactor technology in our country or exploring fuel cycle solutions for the potential reuse of spent nuclear fuel stockpile in Slovakia. At VUJE, we can build on our previous experience and development in the field of high-temperature fast reactors and the reuse of spent nuclear fuel from VVER-440 reactors.
